  18. LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today introduced
  19. Banyan~ VINES~ Version 4.11 with a broad set of new capabilities
  20. that deliver the power and flexibility demanded by companies using
  21. and developing enterprise-wide applications.

  23. Introduced at the Association of Banyan Users International (ABUI)
  24. meeting, VINES 4.11 adds increased multiprocessing server and
  25. high-capacity peripheral support, diskless client support, greater
  26. security and management flexibility, additional application
  27. development tools, higher-speed wide area connections, faster
  28. dial-in links and ISDN connectivity.

  30. "The capabilities and applications development tools of VINES 4.10
  31. introduced in April created the framework for the development of a
  32. new generation of distributed applications," said James D'Arezzo,
  33. Banyan Vice President, Marketing.  "As companies move
  34. mission-critical applications to distributed computing
  35. environements, the demand for more power and platform support has
  36. increased significantly.  VINES 4.11 was created in response to
  37. those requirements."

  39. VINES 4.11 includes an enhanced version of VINES SMPTM to add the
  40. AT&T StarServerE to the symmetric multiprocessing servers supported
  41. by VINES.  VINES Version 4.11 also offers enhanced support for the
  42. COMPAQ Intelligent Disk Array systems and internal tape drives;
  43. support for diskless client workstations; a broader array of LAN
  44. adapters; administrator-forced logout for tighter security; remote
  45. booting and enhanced StreetTalkTM Directory Assistance (STDA) for
  46. more flexible management; closer integration of StreetTalk with
  47. application development tools; and OS/2 NetBIOS support for
  48. application sharing between DOS and OS/2 users.

  55.   VINES 4.11 Supports New Wide Area Products

  57. In conjunction with the announcement of VINES 4.11, Banyan today
  58. introduced new communications capabilities, X.29 Dial-in and the
  59. ICAplus Intelligent Communications Adapter.  CCITT-compliant, X.29
  60. Dial-in allows multiple PCs to dial into a VINES 4.11
  61. server over a single X.25 connection.  This provides network
  62. administrators with greater flexibility in configuring remote
  63. access, faster transmission speeds and more cost-effective
  64. connections.  With X.29 Dial-in, VINES 4.11 is the only network
  65. operating system that allows wide area connections through X.25 or
  66. ISDN networks.

  69. Offering hardware and software compatibility with Banyan's existing
  70. ICA communications adapters, the new ICAplus Intelligent
  71. Communications Adapter offers increased performance up to
  72. 384kb/second, as well as fractional T1 connectivity.  The ICAplus
  73. provides users a cost-effective alternative to bridge/router, or
  74. gateway solutions.  The ICAplus offers unprecedented flexibility in
  75. a communications adapter with its ability to simultaneously support
  76. multiple protocols, including High-speed Data Link Control
  77. (HDLC), Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC), Asynchronous,
  78. Bisynchronous, X.25, and X.29.

  80.                     New Features in VINES 4.11

  82. The increased support in VINES 4.11 for high-end server platforms
  83. gives administrators and developers greater flexibility and power
  84. for implementing distributed applications.  VINES SMP has been
  85. enhanced to leverage the power and scalability of the StarServer
  86. E, with the ability to dynamically balance network loads over four
  87. Intel 80486 CPUs for the most demanding applications.  Support for
  88. Distributed Processing Technology (DPT) disk controllers, 4GB
  89. internal disk storage capacity and full 256MB memory capacity gives
  90. VINES SMP users the power and flexibility to meet current and
  91. future network demands.

  93. Working closely with COMPAQ, Banyan added support for several new
  94. high capacity, high-performance storage and backup devices.  The
  95. Intelligent Disk Array Expansion system provides users with the
  96. ability to expand the disk storage of a VINES 4.11 server
  97. to 19.8GB of online storage.

  100. VINES 4.11 also supports the IBM Remote Program Load (RPL)
  101. protocol.  Using RPL, customers can increase the level of security
  102. by installing diskless PC's as client workstations.  This gives
  103. customers an alternative to costly client workstations and 
  104. prevents unauthorized downloading of sensitive data to local disk
  105. drives.

  110. VINES 4.11 also provides new security and management features.  A
  111. new command allows network administrators to logout a VINES user to
  112. prevent unauthorized access to the network and protect sensitive
  113. data.  The product's remote server reboot capabilities
  114. provide network administrators with the control necessary to reboot
  115. an unattended VINES server.

  117. STDA has been enhanced in two ways.  It allows VINES administrators
  118. the ability to customize how they view names in STDA.  Second, it
  119. allows tighter integration of third party applications such as
  120. cc:Mail and Lotus Notes with VINES by accessing user
  121. attributes through the NetRPC Application Programming Interface.

  123. With VINES 4.11, OS/2 users are able to establish peer-to-peer
  124. communications to share applications over NetBIOS, increasing the
  125. number of applications that can be implemented on the network and
  126. shared between DOS and OS/2 users.

  129.             VINES 4.11 Upgrades, Availability  and Pricing

  131. This release directly benefits VINES users who have purchased the
  132. VINES Subscription Program.  An upgrade to VINES 4.11 will be
  133. provided to eligible subscription holders at no additional cost. 
  134. VINES users who are not under the VINES Subscription Program can
  135. purchase the upgrade which includes a one year subscription for
  136. free minor and update VINES releases and the ability to purchase
  137. major releases at a discounted price.  Suggested U.S. list prices
  138. for VINES 4.11 Upgrade with a one year subscription are:
